Long Point Waterfowl is worried that the McGuinty government is flying blind when it comes to the development of wind power.

The waterfowl study group has set aside $300,000 for a two-year probe of wind turbines and their potential impact on waterfowl in the lower Great Lakes. Long Point Waterfowl is undertaking the research to address gaps in its understanding.

Scott Petrie, executive director of Long Point Waterfowl, is disturbed that the province wants to steamroll dissent on green energy projects when the scientific record is silent on the question of migratory waterfowl and wind turbines.

“I find what the McGuinty government is doing is very scary,” Petrie said. “They don’t want anybody speaking out against turbine locations. I’m very concerned about the Green Energy Act. We’re just trying to provide direction and to help ensure that green energy is as green as green can be.”

Group wants turbine buffer applied in Port Rowan

A group of residents in the countryside west of Port Rowan is looking for help now that the McGuinty government has conceded that wind turbines and people don’t mix very well.

The McGuinty government proposed last month that new wind turbines in Ontario be at least 550 metres away from the nearest residential dwelling. The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Natural Resources are fielding input on the suggestion until July 24.

Now that the province has acknowledged that proximity may be an issue, a group of 15 have written a letter to Norfolk council and senior officials at Queen’s Park and Ottawa asking what they propose to do for those who live next door to wind turbines. The group shares its neighbourhood with the AIM PowerGen wind farm in southwest Norfolk, which features 66 1.5-megawatt turbines.

The economy is being blamed, in part, for the delay of an expansion of the Erie Shores Wind Farm west into Elgin county.

AIM PowerGen, the developer of Erie Shores Wind Farm in Bayham and Malahide, recently announced plans for expansion are being put on hold. AIM developed the concept of Erie Shores, optioned land and sold the concept to the Clean Power Income Fund to build. Erie Shores has since been purchased by Macquarie Power and Infrastructure Fund.
