St. Thomas teacher Ruth Brown rides the Polar Express into retirement

With a lull in the action at St. Thomas city hall and with most area municipal governments, what better time to present a heartwarming story about the power of believing, especially at Christmas time?
Early in December, a note was sent to the myFM newsroom about a full-day kindergarten teacher at John Wise Public School in St. Thomas who was just days away from retirement, following a lengthy career.
It’s a retirement story with an inspirational difference. Teacher Ruth Brown planned to retire only after fulfilling a long-time dream that neatly wrapped up a popular Christmas storybook, her love of teaching students in kindergarten and her pending last day in the classroom into one fairytale that came to life.

So what will Conservative values look like in Elgin-St. Thomas-London South moving forward?

At the beginning of October, we observed it had been relatively quiet on the federal political front in St. Thomas and Elgin since the end of July when MP Karen Vecchio announced in the myFM studio she would not seek re-election in the next federal vote.
If you remember, the next day former London radio broadcaster Andrew Lawton quickly took advantage and announced his intention to seek the Conservative Party of Canada nomination in Elgin-St. Thomas-London South as the re-jigged riding will be known.
By the end of October, the political temperature here had risen significantly.
Normally in this riding over the past few decades, the federal and provincial election campaigns have been relatively sedate affairs conducted in an orderly fashion.

The opening of Westlake-Evans Park: The animation of a downtown space

city_scope_logo-cmykIt’s not just a new park for St. Thomas, it’s an active community hub that will provide a much-needed recreational space in the city’s core.
That was the promise back in June 2020 when Andrew Gunn and Maddie King of Andrew Gunn Consulting and young & free press unveiled plans for what would become Westlake-Evans Park.
On Tuesday of this week, the park was officially opened and it lived up to its billing of three years ago.
St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston praised the park as the result of “incredible collaborative efforts.”
The recreational and cultural hub is located in the city’s core, on the site of the former Colin McGregor Justice Building, giving residents another reason to come downtown, stressed Preston.
“Mostly, it used to be just shopping or services along Talbot Street. Some people came to city hall, and some people were coming to the library, but it was a quick trip in with their family and a quick trip out.

St. Thomas area growth triggers major realignment of roads and highways

city_scope_logo-cmykPreliminary design work is now underway on a massive infrastructure project between St. Thomas and Talbotville.
The undertaking involves three stages: the twinning of Hwy. 3 through St. Thomas to Ron McNeil Line; a new Hwy. 3 alignment that will bypass Talbotville; and the widening of Hwy. 4 from the new Talbotville bypass north to Clinton Line.
No doubt, in part, this is to accommodate traffic into and out of the Volkswagen EV battery plant scheduled to open in 2027 although it is not feasible that this will be fully completed by then.
The Ministry of Transportation has not indicated a tentative completion date at this time.
They have not made anyone available who will go on the record to speak about the work.
On two occasions when approached about further information, they forwarded details of the Hwy. 3 widening near Essex.

Bridging the gap: Province acknowledges local concerns with new 401 interchange

city_scope_logo-cmykThe province has listened and the stretch of Glanworth Drive known as the farmer’s freeway will remain intact with a new alignment of the overpass at Highway 401.
At a public information centre held Thursday (Feb. 1) at the Stoneridge Inn, London, the Ministry of Transportation unveiled its preferred alternative for interchange improvements at the 401 and Col. Talbot Drive.
The original plan would have seen the Glanworth Drive bridge demolished, forcing farmers to move their massive implements on to busier roads. The new interchange will see the Glanworth Bridge replaced and realigned further east with the roadway repositioned to meet Col. Talbot Drive north of its present junction at Littlewood Drive.
