The boil water advisory for St. Thomas, Central Elgin and Southwold rescinded

THE BOIL WATER ADVISORY RESCINDED AT 7:18 P.M. FRIDAY
The water advisory was issued Thursday evening and was expected to remain in effect for at least 48 hours as the result of e. coli and coliform bacteria levels above maximum standards found in water samples. However it was determined late Friday the reading was false as confirmed by an email from the SGS lab in London.

A future without Ford – the new reality

As fallout continues from the news that Ford’s St. Thomas Assembly Plant will shut its doors in fall 2011, three of the biggest casualties locally — Southwold township, the Lear Seating plant and the Elgin-St. Thomas United Way — are taking a look at a future without the plant.
Last Friday, leaders of the Canadian Auto Workers union confirmed what has long been suspected, that the St. Thomas Ford facility will shut its doors in September, 2011, as the company looks to phase out production of the large cars manufactured there — the Crown Victoria, Lincoln Town Car and Grand Marquis. When that happens, 1,400 people will lose their jobs.

Sales are Job No. 1 for Elgin county

A committee aimed at keeping Ford’s St. Thomas Assembly Plant in business is taking aim at police forces across the country.
That’s according to Jim McIntyre, county councillor and mayor of Southwold township, who, with representatives from St. Thomas and the county, particularly from the economic development and tourism office, met May 14 in Toronto with provincial ministers to talk about the future of the Ford plant.
