Realigning Ontario’s Approach to Small and Rural Hospitals to Serve Public Values

A report released Monday by the Ontario Health Coalition appeals for equity and improved access to hospital services in rural Ontario.

The 92-page document is based on input received from more than 1,150 people who attended 12 hearings in regions across Ontario in March.

The report was written and submitted to the Ontario Health Coalition by a non-partisan panel including doctors, nurses, health professional, representatives of each region of Ontario, and representatives active in each political party.

A living nightmare for Elgin St. Thomas Public Health staff

It seems an apology, of sorts, is in order after heaping praise last week on Cynthia St. John for shedding light on the dismissal of four employees in March.

However, this week, we have reason to believe the executive director isn’t exactly being up front about the comings and goings at Elgin St. Thomas Public Health.

To refresh, this corner passed along details of a media release sent our way explaining the background to the 2010 budget and the resultant staff reduction of 3.45 full-time employees.

Let’s just clarify things a tad.

Seems the four employees originally discussed in City Scope are a separate issue from the above employees, who were laid off in the past couple of weeks.

A topic of discussion yet to be dealt with by St. John.

performing.

Unveiled for the first time today (Apr 16/09), myhospitalcare.ca gives Ontarians an unprecedented opportunity to learn more about how their local hospitals are performing by location, type of care, indicator, or hospital name.

By making hospital performance information easy for people to
access, myhospitalcare.ca is empowering patients and helping hospitals become even more accountable than they already are,” says Tom Closson,President and CEO of the Ontario Hospital Association.

St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) has long been committed to public accountability and transparency, and is pleased to have this new site designed with the average person in mind.

“At STEGH we value accountability,” says STEGH CEO Paul Collins. “This new OHA website offers another opportunity for our community to monitor our performance.”

Patients rarely access existing hospital performance information, and
when they do, they often find it very technical and difficult to
understand. However, it is clear that patients want to know more – and understand more – about their hospitals so that they can actively manage their own health care. myhospitalcare.ca is about involving patients.

myhospitalcare.ca is designed solely as a public education tool.
Patients should not use the site as a guide to choosing a hospital.

Like all public reporting on health system performance, this site
strives to inspire improved performance, enhance patient safety and
strengthen the public’s confidence in Ontario’s hospitals.

Meth clinic to open in St. Thomas

Have confirmation a new pharmacy will open on Monday, March 2 at the west end of Talbot Street near Tim Hortons. It will feature a meth clinic, similar to one now operating in London. In fact the facility may be owned by the same individual who operates London Medical Pharmacy’s methadone maintenance treatment centre at 528 Dundas St. E. Any further details would be appreciated.
